Manic Miner Game Designer
In this unit the children will create their own platform game. They will look at the evolution of characters such as Mario and Sonic before designing their own characters. They will think of the storyline for their game and design the levels before creating them and finally publishing their game online. They final challenge will be to recreate the classic 80's platform game Manic Miner in one lesson.
Calendars
In this unit the children will create a calendar by searching for appropriately licensed images and combining these to create a piece of digital art for each month. These calendars will then be sold at the Christmas Fayre. (This unit may be changed as there are overlaps with the CD Covers unit)
What's In the Box?
In this unit the children will learn about how computers actually work. They will begin by drawing what they imagine is inside the box of a desktop PC. They will then see inside a PC and learn about all the various components. they will look at how desktop PCs compare with laptops, tablets, smartphones and consoles.
CD Covers
In this unit the children will design an album cover for a band's debut album. They will have to design a logo for the band (typography) and then find a suitable image to use as the cover. They will produce different versions and post these online so that they can adjust their designs depending on the feedback they receive.
Magazine Project
In this unit the children will work in small groups to produce a small magazine on a topic of their choice. This is a deliberately open project to allow the children to explore desktop-publishing for themselves and will lead onto other DTP projects in later years.
Scratch
In this unit the children will be introduced to Scratch, the Raspberry Pi and the Hummingbird robotics kit.
